Autumn in New York City is undeniably agreeable. After a summer of intolerable humidity and crowded beaches, the fall’s mild temperatures and the expulsion of tourist provides the perfect environment for season changing serenity.
Along with the complimentary foliage, my beloved season brings me the comfort of memories from my childhood. My favorite recollections were of the breezy Sunday afternoons when my mother would load up the Dodge Caravan with my sister, brother and me and we would be off to the pumpkin patch!
How glorious that annual event would seem to a 9 year old boy. How exciting was the hay ride, bouncing up and down on the trailer. We would ride past pumpkins of all sizes, extending left and right and seemingly past the horizon. The tractor-trailer would come to a halt and I would burst off of my hay stack in search of a perfect pumpkin that I could call my own. My pumpkin could have no blemishes, must be no smaller than my extended arms and the stem was required to be a precise size as well. The color had to be consistent throughout and I was even rather picky about the texture of ridges on the shell. My recon missions would last for hours then I would gather 4 or 5 prospects and line them up and compare. There would be no end to my judiciousness and I would probably still be at the pumpkin patch right now if it weren’t for my mom’s ultimatum “Danny, either choose one of those pumpkins right now or leave with none!” With indignation, I would oblige her hastiness and reluctantly make my decision.
My obsession over the perfect pumpkin had little to do with its sweetness when served in a pumpkin pie or how frightening it would appear illuminated in our kitchen window and carved into a jack-o-lantern. I certainly was not concerned with pumpkin’s amazing health benefits and its potential as a juice. No, I was simply an obsessive boy bound by the passion of the hunt!
Now as an adult, I still obsess over perfection and am no less bound by passion. My passions have merely evolved in different directions over the years. From music, to literature, fitness and overall health I have, for the past few years grown more and more passionate about………..you guessed it, juice! The same fixated nature that propelled me to hunt through the pumpkin patch while tired and hungry now drives me in my quest to find the perfect juice!
Aside from the mild temperatures, lack of tourist and fond memories, now every fall brings me yet another joy: experimenting with pumpkin juice. I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite their sweet taste, pumpkins are low in calories and sugar and contain an incredible amount of vitamins and minerals. Pumpkin juice alone is a wholesome treat but when combined with other fruits and vegetables, I am in heaven. As early as September, you can find me back at a pumpkin patch searching yet again for the perfect organic pumpkin to juice and drink along with various combinations and proportions of beets, lemons, carrots, apples, pears, cinnamon, and even leafy greens. I’ll admit that although I am yet to find the one juice that surpasses all others, I have grown incredibly fond of pumpkin with carrot, apple, orange, ginger and cinnamon.
This delicious pumpkin based juice has become an autumn favorite this year at Cooldown and we have decided to share it with you as well! This drink is only available for in store sampling and purchase. Stop in and enjoy!
